We’re big fans of trees, but sometimes they need to be trimmed or even removed completely. And that’s why we’ve created this quick guide to help you through the process.

Why trim a tree?

  • Safety: Trees can sometimes they can be a danger to people or property when not looked after. Branches that are rubbing against each other, close to power lines, or look like they’re ready to fall pose the biggest risks.

  • Health: Sometimes all it takes to save a sick tree is to cut off a diseased or insect-infested branch. Remove the infected branch, and there’s a good chance you’ll remove the problem.

  • Aesthetic: Trimming a tree may help accentuate its physical appearance and improve flower or fruit production. Just don’t go overboard trying to create an unnatural shape because you could damage the tree.

Best time of the year to trim

In most cases, late winter to early spring is the ideal time for pruning because it’s easier to see the shape of the tree after all the leaves have fallen. Also: the trees are dormant this time of year and have yet to undergo new growth.

Worst time of the year to trim

Fall is the least ideal time for heavy pruning. That being said, you shouldn’t wait to trim diseased trees or those with dead or broken branches. Those should be dealt with immediately for safety reasons.
